No Space, Try a Container Garden
Apartment and condo dwellers and individuals whose living arrangements lack a proper backyard don’t have to give up their dream of enjoying gardening as a hobby. No space? Try a container garden, a type of garden in which plants are grown exclusively in pots and other containers rather than in soil beds on the ground. Container gardens can be housed on the smallest back porch or patio using a little ingenuity.
Herbs, vegetables and flowers are the most popular things grown in a container garden, along with strawberries which can easily be cultivated in a container garden in specially designed tall clay pots. Once you have determined the right place for your container garden, select three or four items you can grow in pots or containers such as fresh mint, tomatoes, begonias or marigolds. Get bags of the proper garden soil mixture from your local gardening supply store to fill the containers prior to planting either fully grown plants or seeds for sprouting.
It is important that your container garden location offer at some amount of shade as well as some amount of sunshine for a portion of each day. If the space is totally sunny with no shade, that can easily be fixed using umbrellas or awnings. Once your containers are planted with your choice of vegetable, herb or flower, they can be positioned either on the ground, on multi-level stands or atop
low-lying walls. After positioning each of your containers, check them every hour for one day to see if they need repositioning in order to get the right amount of recommended shade and sunlight daily, or the containers can be moved once daily to follow the sun. And don’t forget to be vigilant with the sprinkling can to provide the right amount of water in between rainfalls.
