Some Gardening Basics

More people are getting into gardening these days due to a poorly performing economy. Gardening is not only very relaxing; it is a great way to supplement your family’s food needs. Plus your produce will be organic and free of contaminants.

There a variety of things to take into consideration when planning your garden. WHERE you place the garden is very important, because ideally you want plenty of sun, unless you only want to grow shade crops. The next critical consideration is soil conditions. Let’s look at these two gardening requirements first.

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This creates in effect an arc pattern over your property. Many people know that a north facing wall is colder than a south facing wall. This same principle applies to gardening. Generally you want maximum sun exposure, especially for sun-lovers like tomatoes. Carefully plan out your garden location for maximum sun exposure, usually on an east-west axis.

Then there are the all important soil conditions. Unless you live on land that was former river bottom, very few places have ideal soil conditions. This means you will most likely have to supplement your gardening soil. Get some litmus paper, mix up a soil paste, and dip in the litmus. This will tell you whether your soil is too acidic or too alkaline. There are things to add to correct these conditions.

Make sure you have a plentiful water supply, because you will use a LOT of water!
Happy gardening!
